Library Policy

 

Library invites all members of the Daffodil International University -- teachers and students -- to make use of its facilities and collections. The following library policies are instituted to ensure the library is able to provide the best services possible for all users.

Library Administrative Policy

Ensure that DIU’s goals are achieved by providing leadership in the development of library policies and strategic plans

  • Develop annual library performance plan and review annually
  • Ensure the provision of high quality services to the University through motivation and encouragement of staff
  • Ensure the provision of quality services and resources that contribute directly to the University’s teaching, learning and research functions
  • Provide strategic advice, leadership and initiative in information management
  • Promote the library as the center for learning and research
  • Monitor continuously the development and application of new technologies that will enhance services provided
     

Library Development Policy

  • Improve user services and facilities
  • Develop websites for knowledge sharing
  • Identify needs and provide high quality learning resources
  • Provide more personalized learning opportunities
  • Promote a peaceful environment for the users to study in
  • Collect employee feedback and respond to it
  • Encourage staff to interact in person to discuss problems and new ideas
  • Allow staff to attend professional conferences, subscribe to professional journals & magazines, seminars and workshops cost efficiently.
     

Collection Development Policy

The purpose of the Collection Development Policy is to provide a framework for the maintenance and development of the library's collections, to indicate priorities, to establish selection criteria across the range of different subjects, languages and media and to create a consistent and coherent basis for the future development of the collections. Collection development depends on the following criteria:

Circulation Policy

  • Borrowing privilege

           Current faculty, staff, and properly registered students of DIU may borrow library materials from the DIU Libraries upon registration as library members. Borrowing privileges will expire when affiliation with the University is dissolved.

  • Check-Out Procedures
    • DIU faculty, staff, and students must present a valid DIU student/employee ID card in order to borrow materials.
    • All materials should be brought to the Circulation Desk to be checked out.
    • Each individual is responsible for all library materials charged to his/her card.
    • Lost ID cards should be reported immediately to the Circulation Desk in DIU Library and to the Admission Office.
  • Loan Periods

           Loan periods vary, depending on patron groups and the types of materials.

           Renew: 01 time for all items.

           *Note: Reference Books, Not for Issue copy / course reserve items must be circulated by keeping students’ ID cards on the desk. [Use only in the library]

  • Renewals

           Items may be renewed in person, by telephone or using the library's web based catalogue. All items may be renewed for up to one loan period, provided:

  • The item is not on reserve for another patron
  • The item is not in high demand
  • Lost and Damaged Material
    Patrons are responsible for all materials while on loan to them, and shall report lost or damaged material at the earliest possible opportunity. 
    A borrower who loses or damages library material shall be required to replace the item. Paying to replace an item is not acceptable unless the item is not available in the market. 
  • Overdue Policies

Patrons are responsible for returning materials on or before the due date. Retention of borrowed materials beyond the date on which library materials are due shall result in a fine.

  •  Holds

            If an item is currently checked out and a patron requires it, they have the option to place a hold. Hold requests can be made either in person or through the online catalog, allowing patrons to secure the item for future use.

  • Recalls
    • A recall is an official request for a book to be returned early.
    • All library materials are subject to recall.
    • Materials needed for reserve can be recalled immediately.
    • Recalled items cannot be renewed.
    • Failure to respond to a recall notice will result in a daily fine and/or the revocation of library privileges.
    • Books not found in the stacks

           If you cannot locate an item in the stacks and it is not checked out, patrons with borrowing privileges may request a search by informing circulation staff. A search for the item will commence, and you will be notified of the results.

  • Use of Study Area

DIU library is committed to providing an environment suitable for reading, study, and activities in support of research and instructional programs.

  • Be considerate and respectful of others in the Library.
  • Leave study spaces neat and clean and ready for use by other patrons. Take all your belongings with you, put trash in the bins provided.
  • Ringing cell phones are not acceptable. Cell phones must be switched to silent mode. If you need to talk, step outside the library.
  • Refrain from any disruptive activity, loud or excessive talking, or behavior that distracts or intimidates other patrons and staff.
  • Respect the quiet study areas. No conversations or other noises are allowed in these areas.
  • Use the group study rooms for group study. Please keep your conversations to a low level, so as not to disturb other users.
  • Posting or placing of bills or flyers within the libraries is prohibited without prior approval from the Library.
  • No photography, videotaping, recording, or filming is allowed in the Library without the express permission of the librarian.
  • Borrower Responsibilities

DIU Library is committed to providing an attractive and supportive environment for study and research. We ask you to help us in this effort by keeping the following in mind:

  • Be responsible for all materials borrowed on your card and keep track of them through “Your Account” (online library account). Return all materials, including reserve materials, promptly.
  • Borrowing privileges are not transferable and are subject to withdrawal if abused.
  • You are responsible for notifying the libraries immediately if your cards are lost or stolen, or if there is any change in name or address.
  • Keep your email address up to date. Library notices are sent via email, so you need an active email address listed in your library account
  • Exercise care in handling library materials. If you damage an item, you'll need to pay for its repair or replacement. Examples of damage can include writing or highlighting, food spills, water damage, Post-It note usage, folding pages, tearing or removing pages, excessive heat or sunlight on media materials.
  • Do not attempt repairs yourself.  Notify the Circulation Desk about damaged materials.
     

Food and Drink Policy

  • Patrons are welcome to bring non-alcoholic drinks into the library
  • Food is not permitted in the library
  • Drinks are permitted in spill-proof mugs and pop-up bottles only.

 We established our food and drink guidelines with the following goals in mind:

  • To create an environment of mutual respect and to promote learning.
  • To preserve our library collections and protect our facility from pests and harmful molds.
  • To help to ensure the health and safety of all library users and a long life for library collections, furnishings, and equipment.
  • To continue to direct library funds to purchasing library resources that support the curriculum, rather than to replacing materials, furnishings, and equipment damaged by food and drink.
     

Information Literacy Policy

The DIU Library has the responsibility to provide information literacy training to all it members and clients with the aim of equipping them with the necessary skills to effectively utilize information for life-long learning.

Information Literacy shall be:

  • Targeted at all DIU students
  • Offered to all DIU new staff members as part of their library induction and to existing staff members on request
  • Marketed to all faculties, students and staff as a core competency for lifelong learning offered in partnership with faculties
  • Primarily disciplined and subject-based
  • Free of charge except for customized or specialized programs.

Modes of presentation may include but are not limited to:

  • Practical and hands-on
  • PowerPoint presentations
  • Web-tutorial – (self study)
  • Virtual tours
  • Workshops
     

Gift and Donation Acceptance Policy

DIUL encourages gift books and other materials as well as donations of money for the purchase of library materials. Over the years, these gifts from faculty, students and private donors have significantly enhanced the library and helped to develop our collections. Before taking donations, DIU has

  • To be informed of the organization’s mission.
  • To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
  • Donation materials support the research needs of faculty and researchers.
     

Replacement and Withdrawal Policy

The purpose of the withdrawal policy is to provide rules for the withdrawal of circulation, public catalogue and shelf list records for library materials which have been discarded, declared officially missing or declared officially lost.
 

Decisions on weeding

Decisions to remove materials will be made by library staff in consultation with academic departments most directly concerned with their possible future use.
Criteria for weeding

  • Criteria which may be used as guidelines for weeding are:
  • Superfluous multiple copies
  • Superseded editions (e.g. annuals, yearbooks, manuals)
  • Worn out, badly marked or mutilated volumes
  • Works containing outdated or inaccurate information
  • Textbooks and instructional material more than 10 years old
  • Subject areas no longer collected, i.e. irrelevant to client needs
  • Material that has not circulated for 10 years
  • Material easily available elsewhere
     

Library Computer & Internet Use Policy

DIU library makes computers and WiFi facilities available to students, faculty, officers and visitors to provide access to library collections and other information resources to support learning and research. To achieve a place of safe and friendly research, the library has established the following rules regarding the use of library computers.

  • Software may not be downloaded on Library computers.
  • Library computers are intended for research and curriculum support.
  • Gaming, gambling, illegal, illicit or commercial activities are not permitted.
  • Users should understand that all computer activity can be monitored.
  • During peak periods, a 45- minute time limit will apply. If patrons are waiting, non library-related use of computers must stop immediately upon request of Library staff.
  • Users may not maliciously access, alter, damage, or destroy any computer system, network, program, or data.
  • The Library has an obligation to maintain a welcoming, comfortable, safe, and harassment-free environment for Library patrons and for University employees. Usage of Library computers must support such an environment.
  • We welcome the use of laptops in the Library’s. Users may connect personal equipment only to the wireless network, or to ports designated for such use. Users may not unplug any Libraries’ equipment or cables for any reason.

Electronic Resource Use Policy

  • The DIU library collects electronic resources e.g., electronic journals, electronic books or database content to support the instructional, research and service activities of the DIU students, faculty and staff.
  • These resources are subscribed through Bangladesh INASP PERI Consortium (BIPC) and are governed by license and contract agreements. Each license or contract contains strict guidelines on the use of the resource.
  • Authorized users are responsible for using these electronic resources for individual, non-commercial use only.
  • No one may systematically download, distribute to non-authorized users, or retain substantial portions of this licensed information.
     

Academic Video Production Policy

 Programs to support course work

  • Programs to support correspondence courses
  • Programs to be added to University archives
  • Tele-course programs
  • Other programs related to academic programs
  • E-educational technological services
  • Video projects will be evaluated and prioritized due to time, staff availability, available equipment and funds.
     

Acquisition Policy

  • DIU library aims to develop and update the library collection with books, journals and periodicals. The policy will act as guide for the acquisition and selection of the library materials to be added to the collection.
  • Faculty members will send the requisition for books through their concerned heads. After receiving the list of books the same lists will be checked properly with the library stock by the librarian or concerned library officer to avoid duplication. In case of emergency, multiple copies should be procured in consultation with the concerned library personnel.
  •  After proper checking, the same list will be sent to the suppliers by the librarian for collecting quotations in which cost of books should be mentioned; whether original / Indian print or local print and the discount should also be mentioned clearly in the offered quotation. The terms and conditions must be applicable to the suppliers in this respect.
  •  At least 03 (three) suppliers / vendors must participate in the process. In special cases, the decision of the Procurement Committee will be exercised.
    Then the librarian will only receive the quotations from the vendors/ suppliers. After the fixed period for submitting quotations has ended, the librarian will call a meeting of the Procurement Committee for opening the quotations received.
  •  Books and other library reading materials are purchased in the library on the recommendation of the Convener of the Procurement Committee with the approval of the Purchase Committee of DIU.

Saturday - Thursday: 8:00 am to 8:00 pm
Friday: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

 

All DIU libraries remain closed on holidays. In addition, the Library may be closed at any time with the prior approval of the University Authority when appropriate. Closing procedures begin 15 minutes prior to actual closing time and all patrons are requested to exit the library 5 minutes prior to actual closing time.
